JTB Concludes its Marketing Research in Japan

The Jordan Tourism Board concluded its marketing research in Japan in collaboration with the reputable Dutch Tourism Board. The study was instigated as part of JTB's initiative to expand its marketing activities to new potential markets, and the indicators were positive.

Japan has a population of over 127 million where over 17 million traveled abroad in 2005. Though most of the outbound tourism was directed to nearby destinations in Eastern Asia and North America, the Japanese tend to visit far destinations in Europe and the Middle East, especially Egypt. As for Jordan, official statistics showed that 6,677 Japanese arrivals visited the kingdom in 2005, which is considered an adequate figure and an indicator for a feasible future.

Traveling trends in Japan include advanced length of stay statistics. In 2004, 27% of Japanese tourists spent 1-4 days; 37.3% spent 5-7 days; 29.1% spent 8-14 days; 29.1% spent 8-14 days; and 6.3% spent more than 15 days outside of Japan.

Furthermore, 64% of the Japanese tourists traveled abroad for the purposes of tourism, 14.1% for business, 6.2% for VFR, and 15.7% for other purposes. Japanese tourists showed high interest in viewing natural and scenic attractions, shopping, and historic and cultural attractions.

The Japanese international tourism expenditure recorded more than US$ 37.6 billion in 2005, with an average expenditure of US$ 2,158 per traveler.

Currently there is no direct flight between Jordan and Japan. Instead, indirect flights by Emirates (14 flights weekly, from Osaka and Nagoya to Dubai), Qatar Airways (4 flights weekly between Osaka and Doha) and Egypt Airways (3 flights weekly between Tokyo and Cairo) are often used for Japanese tours that include Jordan.
