Dead Sea among 14 finalists in New 7 Wonders of Nature

2 years after Petra was voted as one of the world’s 7 wonders, the Dead Sea has qualified to the list of 14 finalists for the world’s 7 natural wonders.

The official supporting Committee of the “New7Wonders of Nature campaign” said the Dead Sea has made it through from over 440 other participants from 220 countries across the Globe.

The Dead Seas was competing against 27 other fascinating and breathtaking locations including the Amazon River, the Galapagos Islands, the Great Barrier Reef, Jeita Grotto, the Grand Canyon, Venezuela's Angel Falls, Canada's Bay of Fundy, the Maldives islands, Italy's Vesuvius volcano, Halong Bay in Vietnam, Iguazu Falls on the border between Brazil and Argentina, Lebanon's Jeita Grotto, Indonesia's Komodo national park and the Puerto Princesa underground river in the Philippines.

A world wonder in its own right, the Dead Sea is located at the lowest spot on earth, more than 420 meters below sea level. Rich in minerals and salts, the Dead Sea's black mud is a popular attraction for its cosmetic benefits and dermatological healing powers. The site of the biblical cities of Sodom and Gomorra, the Dead Sea is the perfect spa location and the only place on Earth that has 8% more oxygen than any other location.

The world’s seven natural wonders will be revealed in 2011 after a competition expected to generate one billion votes, as opposed to the 100 million which saw Petra crowned among the new world wonders in July 2007.

If the Dead Sea wins a position in the new natural wonders of the world, it will make Jordan home to 2 world wonders.
