JTB promotes Kingdom at London tourism fair

The Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) will seek to create more opportunities to sustain the growth of tourism at the annual World Travel Market (WTM), which opened in London on Monday.

A JTB delegation participating in the event is headed by Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Maha Khatib, the chairman of the board of directors and includes representatives of 28 Jordanian tour operators, hotels, airlines and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, according to a JTB statement.
JTB Managing Director Nayef Fayez highlighted the importance of this year’s WTM, which comes at a time when the industry is seeking ways to avoid the negative impact of the global financial and economic crisis.

“We are aiming at promoting Jordan while assessing the impact of the global crisis on the Kingdom,” he said, noting that the number of British tourists grew by 35 per cent last year, to more than 92,000 visitors.
The tourism minister and the JTB managing director are scheduled to hold a series of meetings with their counterparts, trade representatives and the media during the four-day event.

They will also attend a series of World Tourism Organisation conferences, which will focus on the impact of the global financial crisis on the tourism industry, according to the statement.

The WTM is considered to be one of the biggest and most important international tourism fairs, where thousands of international suppliers and buyers meet annually to conduct business with a multitude of media, business and public events taking place on the sidelines.

At yesterday’s opening ceremony, WTM Chairman Fiona Jeffery said the global travel and tourism industry is an incredible force to be reckoned with - regardless of what the financial tsunami decides to throw at it.

She told ministers, ambassadors, trade association and tourism chiefs that the global industry is robust, diversified, innovative, entrepreneurial, and, in most cases, financially sound, according to a WTM statement.

“We simply cannot ignore the crumbling collapses that have scarred international financial markets in recent weeks… We have to face the fact that in some parts of the world in 2009 -certainly here in Western Europe - less package holidays will be sold and those that are, will undoubtedly increase in price,” she said.

“These are unprecedented happenings in our lifetime, but I want you to know that we recognise just how tough it is for much of the industry right now and hope that during the next four days the World Travel Market can contribute positively to helping business plan and reach out to new markets and profit revenues,” Jeffery added.
