JORDAN HIGHLIGHTS
Pope to visit Baptism Site and Amman mosque during Jordan trip

Pope Benedict XVI will visit holy Christian biblical sites and a Muslim mosque during a 4-day trip to Jordan on May 8th.

The Pontiff, who plans to hold a public Mass in Jordan, will stand at the spot on Mount Nebo where Moses first saw the Holy Land. He will also travel to lowest spot on Earth to Bethany-Beyond-the-Jordan where Jesus Christ was baptized by John the Baptist.

Pope Benedict’s first tour of the Holy Land will also include a visit to the Al-Hussein Bin Talal Mosque, which is Jordan's largest mosque, and which will become the second Muslim place of worship to be visited by the Pope since the 2006 visit of Turkey's Blue Mosque in Istanbul.

During his pilgrimage to the Baptism Sites (also known as Al-Maghtas in Arabic), Pope Benedict XVI is expected to lay the corner stone for the Latin Church under construction at the moment. He will be the second pope to visit the Site after Pope John Paul II, who officially recognized it during his 2000 pilgrimage.

The first Papal visit to the Kingdom goes back to 1964.
