ACCOMMODATION

Azraq Lodge, just 1 km from the Wetlands Reserve, is currently under construction and will be opened as a new hub for exploring the Eastern Desert at the beginning of 2006.

The Azraq Reserve Lodge, which includes 16 rooms, is set within the beautiful surroundings of Azraq. Bookings can be made at the RSCN (headquarters in Amman) or on site at the lodge.

Shawmari Camp: The camp is located at the east end of the Nature Centre. There are currently 10 tents (accommodating 40persons per night). Each is equipped with mattresses, pillows and sheets. There are showers and toilets nearby. These facilities are simple but clean. Food and beverage can be provided, if required. The camp is open throughout the year and its facilities are currently being extended.

The Oryx, an elegant white antelope, is one of the few mammals indigenous to the Arabian Peninsula. It became extinct in Jordan around the 1920s. The last known wild Oryx in the world was killed by hunters in Oman in 1972.
In 1978, eleven Oryx were re-located in Shawmari. The number of Oryx has now increased to a phenomenal two hundred!

A wide variety of birds stop at the reserve each year for a rest during their arduous migration routes between Asia and Africa.

The word "Azraq" in Arabic means "blue"
